The Digital Certificate for a private individual is the electronic certification which links the holder to a set of signature verification data in order to confirm his identity.
Who issues these Certificates?
The most common certificate is the one issued by FNMT-RCM (Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda) but there are more organizations that produce these certificates, as for example: CAMERFIRMA, ESFIRMA or ACCV.
What is it for?
It will allow you to identify yourself on the Internet and exchange information with other people and organizations with the guarantee that only you and your interlocutor can access it.
You will have access to the Agencia Tributaria (Tax Office), Seguridad Social (Social Security) or Ministy of Justice, among others, where you can carry out the following:
- Filling Tax Returns
- Consultation of your Local Taxes (IBI or Garbage)
- Get the Padrón
- Administrative Notifications
- Get your Criminal Records
- Get your Employee Records

Who can obtain a Digital Certificate?
Any citizen of legal age or an emancipated minor in possession of a National Identity Number (NIE Certificate) can apply for and obtain a digital certificate free of charge to enable him to use his signature and prove his identity securely online.
What is the process to obtain a Digital Private Individual Certigicate?
There are 3 steps to get the Certificate:
- Apply online. You must provide your ID (NIE), surname, email address and password, and accept the conditions. You will receive a Validation Code.
- Identity verification in the Tax Office (Hacienda). You must get an appointment in your nearest Tax Office to get Certificates.

To verify your identity you must provide the Validation Code received in your email address after you completed the first step, NIE and passport. - Download the Certificate. To download the certificate all you need to include is your NIE, surname and the Validation Code
It’s very important that you apply for the certificate on your own computer because once the officer verifies your identity you will only be able to download on the computer you used to apply.
